A lot of people these days have computers at home, and most of them also have Internet access. Combine these two attributes, along with possessing reasonably good writing skills, then you could be writing for the Net.

You could write for a number of Internet publications and blogs, and write on a diverse range of topics, from food, to medicines and electronic gadgets.

What To Do First

The first thing to do would be to go to a search engine; It would be good to go to a well-known search engine like Google, or Yahoo. Try typing in something specific in inverted commas like ‘Freelance writing on-line’, the search engine then lines up a mass of information, from sites that offer freelance work, to articles about freelance writing or to those that publish market listings. By constantly researching the Net over long periods, you would be able to find some good sites that printed market listings.

Some sites have newsletters for subscribers, this just involves sending them your e-mail address, and they send you a weekly/bi-weekly or monthly newsletter. A weekly writers’ newsletter generally contains articles on writing and a market preview or roundup, and some show warnings of which sites to avoid, especially the ones that that haven’t been paying their freelance writers.

What Articles Would I Write?

At the start, you need to think about what kind of articles you would like to write. Fortunately, there is a wealth of ideas out there. Initially, concentrate on what hobbies or interests you have, you may know a lot about genealogy and what advice to give to a novice, or you may be an avid vegetarian who knows how to grow and cook organic vegetable recipes.

Also try to include on your choices, like the jobs you previously had. You may have had an unusual job, or you could be able to write an article about nursing or stock market trading for example. If you have children then you’d have a treasure trove of ideas to begin writing on.

Suitable childcare for you child, Giving proper advice to your teenager, would be a good thing to write on, among a lot of other topics. If you know a lot about cats, rabbits, parrots etc, then you could dig on that topic. You could also prefer to write a personal essay instead, like My first day at school or My first girlfriend, for example. Write down your ideas on a piece of paper.

Following Submission Guidelines

If a web site specifically asks for an article of between 600 and 800 words, then it would be no good submitting an article of 1,200 words. It is vital that you check on the guidelines, since there are usually writers’ guidelines or submission links on the home page.

Sometimes the web site will inform you about the topics they are looking for, so this would increase your chances of publication if you could write on one of those. Writing styles are also important, so check out the articles that are already published on the site, and see if they are quite formal, informal and humorous.

See if the articles are written from the writer’s personal experience in the first person, or are they written in the second person. Verify too on what type of people are reading or visiting the site. It would be outright useless if you’re writing an article on lawn bowling when the site is aimed at rugby enthusiasts for example.

It would also be good to note that on-line readers tend to read faster and their attention spans are much shorter. You need to break your writing down into smaller parts, small paragraphs, to make it easier for them to read it. It’s also a plus if you add some sub headings to catch the readers attention.
